Real Customer Pattern
Quick answer: The Bombay High Court offers certified-copy appointment booking and status tracking online - the copy application itself follows the court’s process (and may require physical submission), and case status is online too. RTI is a separate route: the High Court frames its own RTI rules, and an RTI application (to the Registrar / Public Information Officer of the concerned bench) is for the registry trail - not for the judicial copy, which the copy process handles. Check the free online copies first. Full national route map: how to get court case records in India.
Route 1 - Free Copies Online (check first)
- Judgments and orders: search the eCourts judgments portal free; the Bombay High Court publishes orders and case status on its site.
- District court case status: services.ecourts.gov.in with the CNR number or party names.
Route 2 - Certified-Copy Appointment & Status Online
For a certified copy of a High Court record, book through the court’s certified-copy appointment and track it on the certified-copy status page; the copy application itself follows the court’s process and may require physical submission, with the fee the court’s rules prescribe (confirm the current amounts on the court’s page). District court copies follow the concerned court’s copying-branch process. This - not RTI - is the route for the copy itself (CIC v. High Court of Gujarat).
Route 3 - RTI for the Registry Trail (when the process stalls)
When the copy service goes silent, a file cannot be traced, or an inspection request vanishes, RTI puts the trail on record. The Bombay High Court frames its own RTI rules; an application to the Registrar / PIO of the concerned bench (fee as those rules prescribe) can ask:
- What to ask: the status and movement of your copy application (our guide), a missing file’s recorded location (our guide), or what survives of an old record (our guide).
- Address the right bench: the Bombay High Court sits at Bombay (principal seat), Nagpur, Aurangabad and Goa (Panaji), with a Circuit Bench at Kolhapur - each with its own registry. Send the RTI to the bench that holds your record.
The Limit - Stated Plainly
RTI does not replace the certified-copy service and cannot compel inspection of judicial records - the court’s rules govern those (CIC v. High Court of Gujarat). RTI’s job is the registry trail: a dated, written account of where your application sits when the copy service has gone quiet.
Common Questions
Which bench do I approach - Bombay, Nagpur, Aurangabad, Goa or Kolhapur?
The one whose territory your case belongs to and whose registry holds the record - the principal seat at Bombay, the benches at Nagpur, Aurangabad and Goa (Panaji), or the Circuit Bench at Kolhapur. Case status on the court’s site or eCourts shows where the matter sits; address both the copy application and any RTI to that bench.
My certified-copy appointment/application has stalled. What now?
Check its status on the court’s certified-copy service first. If it is genuinely silent, the registry-trail RTI (structure here) asks for its status, movement and any defect noted, with your reference number as the anchor.
What about Maharashtra’s district courts?
Case status and orders are on eCourts and the district court sites; certified copies go through the concerned court’s copying branch; and RTI applications go to the PIO of the concerned district court establishment. Copy process first, RTI for the trail.
