Telangana RTI Portal Help: Registration, Department Not Listed, Payment and Offline Filing

Note: FileMyRTI is not a government website. This guide helps citizens use the official RTI portal correctly. If the portal does not support your department or filing route, FileMyRTI can help you file through the correct online or postal method.

Quick answer

You can file online at rti.telangana.gov.in for Telangana State public authorities - but unlike the Central portal, you must first register and log in as a citizen. If the office you need is a Central Government body, use the Central portal instead; if a Telangana office is not in the portal list, file by post. Below: registration, the common errors and fixes, and when to file offline.

Go to rti.telangana.gov.in > Fee: Above Mandal level Rs. 10, Mandal level Rs. 5, Village level no application fee; BPL applicants are exempt with valid proof. Confirm on the portal before payment.
CoversTelangana State Government departments and public authorities - the portal lists thousands of registered Public Authorities (around 3,500) that you choose from a list. First Appeals for Telangana RTIs can also be filed online here.
Does NOT coverCentral (Union) Government offices are NOT on this portal - use the Central portal (rtionline.gov.in) for those. Any Telangana office that has not been onboarded will not appear in the list; for those, file by post.

Before you start, keep these ready

  • A mobile number and email - needed to register/log in and to receive updates
  • Your full postal address
  • The Telangana public authority / department you want information from
  • Your RTI questions, written out in plain text
  • A payment method (net banking, Visa/Master/RuPay card or UPI)
  • Any supporting document the portal asks for, as a small PDF (if claiming BPL exemption, attach the BPL certificate; do not upload extra identity documents unless the form requires them)
Good to know: Unlike the Central portal, the Telangana portal requires you to register and log in as a citizen (Citizen Registration) before you can file. Keep your login details safe - you will need them to track status and to file a First Appeal later.

How filing works

  1. Complete Citizen Registration and log in - the Telangana portal needs an account before you can file.
  2. Start a new RTI request and select the concerned Telangana Public Authority / department from the list.
  3. Enter your applicant details and write your RTI questions in plain text.
  4. Attach only what the portal asks for - if claiming BPL exemption, attach the BPL certificate; do not upload extra identity documents unless the form requires them.
  5. Pay the fee online by net banking, Visa/Master/RuPay card or UPI. BPL applicants are exempt with valid proof.
  6. Submit and save the acknowledgement number - you need it to track the RTI and to file a First Appeal online.
Good to know: The Telangana portal sends your RTI electronically to the Nodal Officer of the selected public authority, who then forwards it to the concerned PIO.

If your department is not listed (the most common problem)

  • Look for the parent Telangana department - the office may sit under a larger public authority that is listed.
  • If it is a Central Government office - it is not on this portal; use the Central portal (rtionline.gov.in) instead. See our Central portal help.
  • If a Telangana office is genuinely not in the list (not onboarded), file by post to its PIO - see our guide to filing RTI offline.
  • Use Section 6(3) (transfer) only after a reasonable effort to find the right office. See Section 6(3) explained.
  • Not sure which office or PIO? Use FindMyPIO, or let FileMyRTI identify it and file for you.

Common portal errors and how to fix them

Registration or login not working

The Telangana portal needs a citizen account. If registration or login fails, reset your password, double-check the email/mobile you registered with, clear the browser cache or try another browser. If it keeps failing and your matter is time-sensitive, file by post so you do not lose time.

OTP not received during registration or login

Wait a few minutes and request a resend; check both SMS and email (including spam), and make sure the mobile number has signal. Try again later before assuming it is broken.

Portal rejects special characters in your RTI text

Avoid bullets, emojis, smart/curly quotes and copied formatting. Paste your draft into Notepad first to strip the formatting, then use simple punctuation before pasting it into the box.

Payment failed, or amount debited but not confirmed

Do not pay again immediately. Save the bank reference number and check the portal/payment status. If the issue does not resolve, contact the Telangana RTI helpdesk before making a duplicate payment.

Supporting document upload failed

Use a small PDF and remove spaces from the file name. Upload only what the Telangana portal specifically asks for - if claiming BPL exemption, attach the BPL certificate; do not upload extra identity documents unless the form requires them.

Your department / public authority is not listed

Search for the parent Telangana department the office sits under. If it is a Central Government office, use the Central portal instead. If a Telangana office is genuinely not in the list, it has not been onboarded - file by post to its PIO.

Filing a First Appeal

You can file the First Appeal online on the Telangana portal using your acknowledgement number and login - if the RTI was filed online here. If your RTI was filed physically, file the appeal physically too, unless the public authority has lodged that manual RTI on the portal.

When to use a State portal or file offline instead

  • The office is a Central Government body - use the Central portal (rtionline.gov.in) instead of this one.
  • A Telangana office or local body is not in the portal list (not onboarded) - file by post to its PIO.
  • Registration or payment keeps failing, or the portal is repeatedly down.
  • You want a Speed Post trail as documentary proof of filing.

For the postal route, see how to file an RTI offline (by post), including how to attach the fee.
