Quick answer: To track a cyber-fraud complaint, file an RTI to the police office handling it — the cyber cell or police station to which your National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal (cybercrime.gov.in) complaint, acknowledgement no. ________, was assigned. Ask for the action taken, the investigating officer, and whether the bank or wallet was asked to freeze the money. The PIO must reply within 30 days.

Why cyber-fraud complaints stall

You report a fraud on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal (NCRP) or the 1930 helpline, get an acknowledgement number — and then nothing. The complaint is routed to a local cyber cell, but unless the money was frozen in the first hours, follow-up is slow and you are rarely told what is happening.

How an RTI helps

An RTI forces the police office to put the action taken on record — whether an FIR was registered, whether the receiving bank/wallet was contacted to freeze or reverse the transaction, and who is investigating. This often restarts a stalled case, and the record helps if you escalate.

Who to send the RTI to

Address it to the PIO, Office of the Commissioner / Superintendent of Police or the Cyber Crime Police Station of the district to which your NCRP complaint was assigned. If an FIR was registered, use that police station.

What to ask in your RTI

  1. The action taken on my cyber-crime complaint, NCRP acknowledgement no. ________ dated ________, with the dates of each step.
  2. Whether an FIR has been registered; if so, the FIR number and date.
  3. Whether the concerned bank / wallet / payment company was asked to freeze or reverse the transaction, and on what date.
  4. The name and designation of the investigating officer.
  5. The current status of the investigation and the next step.

Ready-made format: our sample RTI for FIR / police status adapts directly to a cyber-fraud complaint.

If you get no reply in 30 days

No reply is a deemed refusal — file a First Appeal to a senior officer in the same police office.

Want it drafted to the correct cyber-police office and filed for you? FileMyRTI does it from ₹399.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can RTI help recover money lost to a cyber fraud?

RTI does not recover the money itself, but it forces the police to record the action taken — including whether the bank was asked to freeze the transaction — which often restarts a stalled case and supports any escalation.

Who is the PIO for a cyber-crime complaint?

The PIO at the office of the Commissioner / Superintendent of Police, or the cyber-crime police station, of the district to which your NCRP complaint was assigned.

What number do I quote in the RTI?

Your NCRP acknowledgement number (from cybercrime.gov.in or the 1930 helpline) and, if registered, the FIR number.

How long must the police take to reply?

The PIO must reply within 30 days. No reply is a deemed refusal and entitles you to a First Appeal.
