Karnataka police complaint gone quiet? Do this next
Choose the route matching your situation below - the official steps say which applies to a station complaint, an e-Lost report, or an FIR. The RTI section then covers what you can request about the records actually held. Every fact on this page renders from a source verified on the date shown.
FileMyRTI is not a government website. The official route below involves no FileMyRTI charge - any official fee is the department's own, stated on its portal. Our paid help applies only at the RTI stage, if you choose it.

Check scope. Karnataka State Police services does not handle: Emergencies (112). Complaints against police personnel of Additional SP rank and above (and certain serious-misconduct allegations involving lower ranks) go to the State Police Complaints Authority - check SPCA's criteria before filing.
Step 1 - File correctly. For lost articles or documents, file an e-Lost report through the KSP portal/app and keep the report number.
Step 2 - Track it. Which route applies: for a lost article, e-Lost is contact-on-found only - there is nothing to track, and silence ordinarily means the article has not been reported found. For an ordinary complaint given at a station, no online follow-up or tracking route is published on the KSP portal - the RTI record request is the paper trail. For an FIR, use the FIR search.
Step 4 - Escalate on the portal. For police personnel of Additional SP rank and above (and certain serious-misconduct allegations involving lower ranks): the State Police Complaints Authority - check its jurisdiction criteria before filing.

Still stuck? Put it on record with an RTI
If a complaint sees no action, identify the police unit that holds your complaint record, address the RTI to that public authority's SPIO, and request the recorded status and copies of any action recorded, if any (investigation details may be exempt under Section 8(1)(h)); KSP publishes its RTI section with forms.
What to ask for (quote your registration number):
- For a station complaint: the present status of the complaint given on [DATE] at [STATION], and the officer or desk it is pending with, if it is pending with anyone.
- For a station complaint: a copy or extract of any diary / register entry made for it and any action recorded, if any, subject to applicable exemptions.
- For an e-Lost report: confirmation that report number [YOUR NUMBER] is on record, and copies of any record held about it, if any.
- For a station complaint: if it was closed or not proceeded with, the reasons recorded.
Under Section 7(1) of the RTI Act, the PIO is ordinarily required to respond within 30 days.
If the RTI reply does not arrive or is unsatisfactory, a First Appeal lies with the First Appellate Authority of the same public authority within 30 days.
Common questions
I filed an e-Lost report and heard nothing. Is that a delay?Ordinarily, no. e-Lost is a contactless registration: the police contact you if the article is found by any station in Karnataka, so silence usually means it has not been reported found. It is not an investigation or tracking service. An RTI to the concerned public authority's SPIO can confirm your report is on record and request any records actually held about it.
Will an RTI make the police investigate or find my article? An RTI cannot order an investigation or the recovery of an article. It provides access to records actually held - for a station complaint, its status and any entry or action recorded, if any; for an e-Lost report, confirmation it is on record - and information that would impede an investigation may be exempt under Section 8(1)(h).
Is my case an FIR matter or a station complaint? If an FIR was registered, you can look it up on the Karnataka Police FIR search (district and FIR number), and for the copy or status our FIR guide covers the RTI route. For a complaint given at the station without an FIR, the RTI asks for any entry or action recorded against your complaint, if any.
