BWSSB water or sewerage complaint unresolved? Do this next

An unresolved water or sewerage complaint is worth pushing through the official steps before RTI enters. Every step below renders from a source verified on the date shown; the RTI section then covers what you can request about the record when the complaint stays open.

FileMyRTI is not a government website. The official route below involves no FileMyRTI charge - any official fee is the department's own, stated on its portal. Our paid help applies only at the RTI stage, if you choose it.

First, make sure the official route is exhausted

Step 1 - File correctly. Lodge the complaint on the BWSSB complaint system and keep the complaint number.
Step 2 - Track it. Search your complaint number on the complaint system’s View Complaint page.

Still stuck? Put it on record with an RTI

If a BWSSB complaint stays unresolved, an RTI to BWSSB's PIO can request the complaint record, action taken and recorded reasons - BWSSB publishes its RTI Act page.

What to ask for (quote your registration number):
  1. The present status of the complaint bearing complaint number [YOUR NUMBER], and the officer or section it is currently pending with.
  2. The action taken on this complaint as per the record, with copies of any inspection or site-visit report.
  3. Any timeline prescribed for attending to a complaint of this category, and the recorded date on which this complaint was attended to.
  4. If the complaint was closed, a copy of the closure noting with the reasons recorded.

Under Section 7(1) of the RTI Act, the PIO is ordinarily required to respond within 30 days.

If the RTI reply does not arrive or is unsatisfactory, a First Appeal lies with the First Appellate Authority of the same public authority within 30 days.

Common questions

What do I need to keep after lodging a BWSSB complaint?Keep the complaint number. The complaint system has a View Complaint page that searches by complaint number, and that number is what an RTI can ask the record about.
Will an RTI get my water supply restored or the sewerage fixed? An RTI cannot order the repair or the restoration of supply. It provides access to the record - the status, the action taken, the officer it is pending with and the reasons recorded - which documents where the complaint stands for your next escalation.
Who do I address the RTI to?BWSSB is itself the public authority for its water and sewerage services. Address the RTI to BWSSB’s SPIO and request the records it holds; BWSSB publishes its own Right to Information page and links the Karnataka RTI portal as its online RTI route.
Is this a BWSSB matter or a general grievance? For water supply, sewerage, borewell, waste-water and billing matters in the BWSSB area, the BWSSB complaint system is the route. For grievances about departments or schemes generally, use Janaspandana.
