Chandigarh RTI Online Help: File via the Central Portal (UT of Chandigarh), Payment and Offline Options
Note: FileMyRTI is not a government website. This guide helps citizens use the official RTI portal correctly. If the portal does not support your department or filing route, FileMyRTI can help you file through the correct online or postal method.
Chandigarh is unusual: its Administration RTIs are filed online through the Central RTI portal at rtionline.gov.in - choose "UT of Chandigarh" and then the department (over 70 are covered, including the Municipal Corporation and Chandigarh Housing Board). You can also file by post, in person, or at an e-Sampark / Jan Sampark centre, with the Rs. 10 fee. Second appeals go to the Central Information Commission (Chandigarh has no own State Information Commission).
Before you start, keep these ready
- A mobile number and email
- Your full postal address
- The Chandigarh department / public authority you want information from
- Your RTI questions, written in plain text
- A payment method (online via the Central portal, or offline IPO / DD / banker's cheque / cash)
- A BPL certificate, if claiming the exemption
How filing works
- Open rtionline.gov.in and use the "Submit Request" tab.
- Select "UT of Chandigarh", then the concerned Chandigarh department / public authority.
- Enter your applicant details and postal address.
- Write your RTI request in clear, plain text.
- Pay the Rs. 10 fee online (BPL applicants are exempt) - or file offline by post / at an e-Sampark centre.
- Submit and save the registration number - you need it to track and to file a First Appeal.
If your department is not listed (the most common problem)
- On rtionline.gov.in, select "UT of Chandigarh" first - then the Administration department list appears.
- If it is a Central Government ministry/office, select that ministry on the same portal - see our Central portal help.
- If it is another State, use that State's RTI route.
- Prefer offline? File a written RTI to the PIO by post or at an e-Sampark centre - see our guide to filing RTI offline.
- Not sure which office or PIO? Use FindMyPIO, or let FileMyRTI identify it and file for you.
Common portal errors and how to fix them
Cannot find the Chandigarh department
On rtionline.gov.in, first select "UT of Chandigarh" - then the department list appears. If it is a Central Government ministry, select that ministry instead. If you cannot file online, file by post or at an e-Sampark centre.
Payment failed, or amount debited but not confirmed
Do not pay again immediately. Save the bank reference and check the status; retry only after confirming.
Portal rejects special characters in your RTI text
Remove bullets, emojis, smart/curly quotes and copied formatting. Paste via Notepad first, then use simple punctuation.
Prefer not to file online
You can submit a written RTI to the PIO by post, in person, or at an e-Sampark / Jan Sampark centre - keep the receipt.
No registration number generated
Do not assume the RTI was filed. Check the status and your email; if nothing appears, retry or file by post and keep proof.
Filing a First Appeal
For an RTI filed online (UT of Chandigarh) on rtionline.gov.in, you can file the First Appeal online using your registration number. For a postal RTI, file the First Appeal by post to the departmental First Appellate Authority. For a Second Appeal or complaint, approach the Central Information Commission (CIC) - Chandigarh has no own State Information Commission.
When to use a State portal or file offline instead
- You prefer to file by post, in person, or at an e-Sampark / Jan Sampark centre.
- The online portal or payment is repeatedly failing.
- You want a Speed Post trail as documentary proof, or you already know the PIO address.
For the postal route, see how to file an RTI offline (by post), including how to attach the fee.
Postal RTI packet checklist
- Signed RTI application addressed to the PIO
- Rs. 10 fee instrument or BPL proof
- Supporting document, if needed
- Envelope addressed to the PIO
- Your return address
- A photo/photocopy of the full packet before dispatch
- The Speed Post / e-Sampark receipt
Unsure which Chandigarh department or route? FileMyRTI can identify the PIO and file it for you.
