1) Filing to the wrong authority
Consequence: rejection/forwarding → delays. Fix: identify the correct public authority/PIO first.
2) Vague, open-ended questions
RTI is for existing records, not opinions. Fix: ask for status, certified copies, note-file extracts, date-wise movement, officer names/designations, and applicable timelines.
3) Ignoring exemptions
Section 8 limits disclosure in narrow cases. Fix: frame within permissible scope; if in doubt, narrow your request.
4) Fee/payment errors
Unpaid or incorrect fee can invalidate an application. Fix: pay ₹10 correctly (BPL exempt with proof) and keep receipts.
5) Not keeping proofs
Without copies/acknowledgements, appeals become hard. Fix: retain application, payment proof, and dispatch/portal acknowledgements.
Pro move: Limit to one or two related points per RTI. File another RTI if you need a different set of records.
