How to Track Your RTI Application Status (Central & State Portals Guide)

Why tracking matters & what you’ll need

Tracking confirms that your RTI application is received, routed to the right Public Information Officer (PIO/CPIO), and processed within timelines. Keep these handy:

  • Your reference/registration number from the portal or acknowledgement.
  • The email/phone used while filing (for OTPs/alerts, if any).
  • Any payment receipt or acknowledgement PDF.

Tracking on the central RTI portal (union ministries)

  1. Open the central RTI portal for union government ministries/departments.
  2. Use the View Status/Check Status option.
  3. Enter your registration number and requested details.
  4. View live status, transfers (if any), and the reply once issued.
Respectful note: We follow the official RTI portal process. FileMyRTI helps with drafting, filing, and appeals while adhering to all rules.

Tracking on state RTI portals (typical steps)

States operate their own portals. Steps are generally similar:

  1. Go to your state’s RTI portal and choose Application Status.
  2. Enter your reference/acknowledgement number (and captcha/OTP if asked).
  3. Check if the application is under process, transferred, clarification requested, reply sent, or closed.
  4. Download any available reply letter or attachments.

How to read common status messages

  • Submitted/Under Process: The PIO/CPIO has received it; processing within timelines.
  • Transferred u/s 6(3): Sent to another public authority that holds the records. Timelines apply from the date of transfer.
  • Clarification Requested: You may need to respond on the portal/email; reply promptly to avoid closure.
  • Reply Sent/Closed: Check the attached reply/document links; download and save.
  • Returned/Rejected (fee or format): Correct the issue and refile, or use First Appeal if you disagree.

No reply in time? File a first appeal

Standard RTI timelines are 30 days (or 48 hours for life & liberty). If no reply or an incomplete reply is received within time, file a First Appeal to the designated Appellate Authority (ideally within 30 days of lapse/reply). Keep your acknowledgement, reference number, and the exact points you raised.

Best practices for smooth tracking

  • Use a single email/phone for all filings to receive alerts consistently.
  • Save PDFs/SMS/emails as evidence for appeals.
  • If transferred, note the new public authority and follow up there.
  • Keep requests records-based: status, certified copies, note-file extracts, date-wise movement, officer names/designations, and timelines.
