What is the RTI Act?
The Right to Information Act, 2005 empowers Indian citizens to access information held by public authorities. It promotes transparency, accountability, and better service delivery across central and state departments.
Who can file & what can be asked
- Who: Any Indian citizen (individuals; organizations cannot file directly).
- What: Request existing, factual records — status, copies, note-files, movement registers, date-wise action taken, names/designations of officers handling the file, and timelines as per citizen charters.
- Avoid: Open-ended “why” questions or opinions. Stick to recorded facts and documents.
- Exemptions: Section 8 lists limited exemptions (e.g., national security, personal information without public interest). Frame queries within permissible scope.
Official timelines
- Standard RTI: Reply within 30 days of receipt.
- Life & liberty: Within 48 hours.
- Third-party consultation: Up to 40 days.
How to file RTI online (step by step)
- Identify the correct public authority / PIO responsible for your matter.
- Draft precise, records-based points (status, certified copies, date-wise movement, officer names/designations, applicable timelines).
- File via the appropriate portal (Central or State) or submit physically as applicable.
- Pay the fee (usually ₹10; BPL applicants are exempt with proof).
- Track your reference number and keep all proofs.

First & second appeals
